Blueberry Tea

It was January 2003 when I made my first ski trip to Lake Tahoe. My second semester at Stanford had just kicked off and a group of us headed up to the mountains. After a full day of skiing, we headed to the bar to grab a drink before relaxing in our hot tub. I did what any good Canadian would do after a cold day in the mountains: I ordered Blueberry Tea.

…and that was the day I discovered that Blueberry Tea (the alcoholic kind) is completely unknown outside of Canada.

Let’s start with the basics: Blueberry Tea does not actually involve blueberry tea. Or blueberries of any kind.

It is, however, a magical beverage that tastes like blueberry tea. With a bit of kick.

And it’s a perfect drink on cold winter nights and evenings by the fire.

Blueberry Tea

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Grand Marnier

  • 1 oz Amaretto

  • 1 cup orange pekoe tea

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 orange slice

Preparation

The ideal way to serve Blueberry Tea is in a brandy sniffer (this allows the aromatic steam from the drink to provide maximum happiness). If you have a brandy sniffer at home, pre-heat it by rinsing the glass with hot water. Otherwise, use your favorite tea mug.

Prepare the orange pekoe tea in a pot (or a second cup) according to the instructions. Do not make the tea in the same cup you plan to drink out of. Remove and discard the tea bag(s) when the tea is ready.

In your brandy sniffer or serving cup, pour 1 oz Grand Marnier and 1 oz Amaretto.

Add 1 cup of the prepared orange pekoe tea. Use the cinnamon stick to give it a stir and add the orange slice.

Enjoy!
